What is Aerial Dance
With its roots in modern dance, gymnastics and circus performance, aerial dance is an innovative art form that was pioneered in the late 1960s by Terry Sendgraff. Since its inception, aerial dance has developed its own movement vocabulary and has grown to include over 25 dance companies in the US alone. Though similar at first glance, aerial dance differs from circus performance in two key ways. 1. Aerial Dance is low-flying and provides endless opportunities for partnering between grounded and flying dancers. 2. Whereas circus trapeze is rigged from two points and swings back and forth, aerial dance trapeze is hung from a single point of attachment adding dimension and circular flight.
This connection between ground and air in a circular flow of movement is what helps define aerial dance and makes it so unique to watch. You can now read all about the history and pioneers of aerial dance in our new book-DVD. Click on THE BOOK on the home page.
